Effects of Population Density on Revegetation of Artemisia sphaerocephala and Soil Traits in a Desert Ecosystem

Soil desertification is a serious problem in arid northwestern China that threatens ecological sustainability. Artemisia sphaerocephala, dominant shrub species, play an important role the conservation of water and restoration soil desert ecosystem. However, poor establishment A. sphaerocephala often limits plant revegetation, optimal population density for sustainable growth largely unknown. Here, we determined key properties characteristics associated with different densities (including from 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 3.9 to 5.3 plants per m2) resource-limited Alashan China. The results showed was primary factor determining revegetation followed by availability. N, P K content, fractal dimensions also contributed vegetation productivity. nutrients were mostly accumulated topsoil layers, coincidental root distribution pattern which 57% 82% total roots distributed top 20 cm layer. concentrations higher (3.9 greater than those lower (1.1 2.1 m2), suggesting may have ability promote nutrient cycling We conclude best revegetated 3 m2.
